Köln · Als er durch die Boygroup *NSYNC zum Star wurde, war er 16 Jahre alt. Jetzt, mit 43, hat der Popstar von seiner Strahlkraft immer noch nichts eingebüßt.

Justin Timberlake hat am Sonntag eine richtig große, bunte, fröhliche Party geschmissen. In der Kölner Lanxess Arena. Und an diesem Montag folgt Teil zwei. Beide Male ist die Arena restlos ausverkauft, vom Innenraum bis unters Dach. Pro Abend macht das, geschätzt, jeweils 17.000 Menschen. In nicht ganz exakt zwei Stunden erleben sie einen Künstler, der alles kann, was auch die Trolls aus den Animationsfilmen können: kuscheln, singen und tanzen. Und auch ganz furchtbar glücklich sein. Am deutlichsten spürt man das, wenn der 43-jährige zur Zugabe „Mirrors“ noch einmal auf die Mittelbühne zurückkehrt.

Sein Gesicht ist ein einziges Leuchten

Um dann, mitten im Stück, das Mikro auf den Boden zu legen. Er legt sich die Arme um die Schultern, so als wolle er sich selbst umarmen, er dreht den Kopf nach rechts und links und betrachtet die jubelnde Menge, die ihn umgibt. Sein Gesicht ist ein einziges Leuchten, sein Lachen entfaltet eine Strahlkraft bis hoch hinauf in die Ränge. Aber es liegt auch eine Art von kindlichem Staunen darin: sie meinen mich. Tatsächlich mich.

Bedankt hat er sich schon vorher. Bei den vielen bekannten Gesichtern, die er vom Rondell vis-á-vis der Hauptbühne aus entdeckt hat, die Teil seines Lebens sind und seiner Vergangenheit: „Wir sind zusammen aufgewachsen.“ Als er durch die Boygroup *NSYNC zum Star wurde, war er 16, und womöglich im gleichen Alter wie die blonde Fanfrau, die ein Pappschild hochhält, auf dem geschrieben steht: „From Teen to Mom“, vom Teenager zur Mama.

„Love and Fellowship“

Er bedankt sich bei ihr und all den anderen für „Love and Fellowship“, für die Liebe und die Gemeinschaft, und dafür, dass sie immer wieder zu ihm raus und zurückgekommen sind. Manchmal, so sagt er, sei es schwierig, Worte dafür zu finden. Aber er findet sie, sogar auf deutsch: „Ich liebe euch alle.“ Das Lied aus dem Trolls-Film „Can’t Stop The Feeling“, mit dem er 2016 einen Riesenhit landete, singt er auf dem Rückweg vom Rondell, zur Hauptbühne. Wo er dann, mit seiner Band und seinen vier Bläsern und drei Backgroundstimmen und fünf Tänzerinnen und Tänzern noch einmal so richtig Party macht. Mit „Rock Your Body“ und, unverzichtbar, „SexyBack.“

Vor der Kulisse eines Highways in der Wüste, über dessen Kakteensilhouetten in glühendem Rot-Orange die Sonne auf oder untergeht, mit einer Tankstelle und einer Telefonzelle irgendwo im Nirgendwo, und einem am linken Bildrand geparkten Straßenkreuzer mit eingeschalteten Scheinwerfern, entwickeln der US-Amerikaner aus Memphis, Tennessee und sein Team eine fulminante Show. Sie lebt von starken Bildern wie dem, wo er bei „Drown“ in XXL-Größe in einem Glaskasten von Wasser geflutet wird oder bei „Infinity Sex“ zwei plastikweiße Roboter-Avatare einander immer wieder von Neuem umschlingen, ehe sie zu Staubpartikeln pulverisiert werden.

Das Tanzen klappt noch immer wie am Schnürchen

Das Tanzen im Ensemble klappt noch immer wie am Schnürchen, auch das Falsettsingen beim Glanzstück „My Love“ hat Timberlake immer noch drauf. Und dass „Cry Me A River“ vom Solo-Debüt-Album „Justified“ ganz besonders viel Applaus einheimst, liegt wohl an den vielen Ex-Teenager- nun Mama-Fans im Publikum. In Gänze funktioniert der Mix aus Funk, R&B und Pop blendend. Und Songs wie das akustische „Selfish“ sind zum Schmelzen.

Allein der Titel der Tour mutet, in Anbetracht der Umstände im Juni, ein bisschen unglücklich an. „Forget Tomorrow“, sinngemäß mit „Denk’ nicht an Morgen“ übersetzt, hat ein bisschen was von „Nach mir die Sintflut“.

Aber als Timberlake am 29. April von Vancouver aus auf Weltreise ging, war er auch noch nicht in die Schlagzeilen geraten, durch seine Verhaftung wegen einer Fahrt nach zu viel Alkohol am Steuer. Mit Journalisten hat der Star keine guten Erfahrungen gemacht.

Im Original-Animationsfilm von 2016 hat Timberlake nicht nur den Song beigesteuert, sondern auch einen der Trolls, den grauen Branch, synchronisiert. Der grau vor Trauer wurde und nie wieder singen wollte. In Köln, am Sonntag, ist lediglich Timberlakes Jackett grau. Und singen tut er wunderschön.

And the fact that “Cry Me A River” from his debut solo album “Justified” gets particularly big applause is probably due to the many ex-teenager-turned-mom fans in the audience.
