Ze zijn er allemaal: de kwajongen, de dandy, de crooner, de plattelandsjongen, allen verenigd in de persoon Justin Timberlake, een van de grootste popzangers van deze eeuw. Op het toneel weet hij deze personages raak te verbeelden, in een twee uur durende show die donderdagavond imponeerde met visuele techniek en muzikaliteit. Al was Timberlake een tijdje uit beeld – zijn vorige album verscheen zes jaar geleden – de huidige ‘come back’-tournee is een succes. Overal uitverkocht, en uitvoeriger dan ooit. In Amsterdam staat hij nu drie avonden in Ziggo Dome, tegen twee in 2018.

De ‘Forget Tomorrow’-tour is een reis door zijn carrière en laat Timberlake zien als eersteklas zanger en flitsende danser. De nummers zijn goed gekozen, de sfeer is feestelijk. Bij al die glamour en uitgelatenheid is het de vraag welk beeld of welke boodschap hij hier wil overbrengen. Het antwoord is waarschijnlijk: succes. Hoewel hij afgelopen juni werd gearresteerd in Long Island (NY) wegens rijden onder invloed, en in die staat zijn rijbewijs voorlopig is ingenomen, is hij in Ziggo Dome nog steeds een ‘wonderkind’, van 43 jaar. Alles draait dan ook om de persoon Timberlake: van de dicht om hem heen krioelende dansers tot de bovenmaatse projecties op de achtergrond, waar Timberlake verschijnt als standbeeld, als dolende ridder, als toffe vriend. De zelfverheerlijking werd enigszins genuanceerd door een sympathieke speech. Hij zag bekende gezichten in de zaal, van eerdere concerten, zei hij: „We zijn samen opgegroeid.” Waarna hij dankte voor de support.

Synchroon feestende menigte

Op het podium stonden elf muzikanten op een rij, waaronder vier schetterende blazers. Er waren dansers die ook zongen en het was mooi dat de muzikanten nu en dan van hun verhoging stapten om mee te dansen. Zo ontstond er een synchroon feestende menigte op de voorgrond.

Er werden opvallend veel nummers gespeeld van het nieuwste album Everything I Thought It Was (2024) waarop Timberlake de scherpe funk en falsetstem uit zijn begintijd weer oppikte. Het broeierige ‘Drown’, met Timberlake ‘verdrinkend’ op de achtergrondprojecties, was een uitschieter. Ook de disco-referenties van ‘My Favorite Drug’ en ‘F**kin’ Up the Disco’, inclusief disco-licht en disco-dansjes, waren aantrekkelijk. De grootste hits bewaarde hij voor het laatst, toen liedjes als ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ en ‘Rock Your Body’ een uitbundige vrolijkheid ontketenden.

Eén groot straatfeest

Zo was de sfeer deels West Side Story, deels Saturday Night Fever, en voor een deel ook AI – door de overdaad aan wezenloze badschuimbubbels en kleurexplosies op de enorme schermen. Er werd scherp en soepel gedanst, ook door Timberlake, maar de show leunde iets te veel op podiumtechniek, de creatieve inbreng was minder verrassend. Afgezien van één fantastische vondst. Dat was toen de hele troupe zich verplaatste naar een tweede podium achter in de zaal. Dat deden ze niet door een tunnel maar via afgezette paden dwars door het publiek en ondertussen speelden ze het liedje ‘Play’. Ze zongen, dansten, en speelden bas en trompet, al wandelend. Even veranderde Ziggo Dome in één groot straatfeest, een heuse ‘block party’.

They are all there: the rascal, the dandy, the crooner, the country boy, all united in the person of Justin Timberlake, one of the greatest pop singers of this century. On stage, he manages to portray these characters accurately, in a two-hour show that impressed on Thursday evening with its visual technique and musicality. Although Timberlake has been out of the picture for a while - his previous album was released six years ago - the current 'come back' tour is a success. Sold out everywhere, and more extensive than ever. In Amsterdam he is now performing three nights in Ziggo Dome, compared to two in 2018.

The 'Forget Tomorrow' tour is a journey through his career and shows Timberlake as a first-class singer and flashy dancer. The songs are well chosen, the atmosphere is festive. With all that glamour and exuberance, the question is what image or message he wants to convey here. The answer is probably: success. Although he was arrested in Long Island (NY) last June for drunk driving, and his driver's license was temporarily revoked in that state, he is still a 'child prodigy' in Ziggo Dome, aged 43. Everything revolves around the person Timberlake: from the dancers swarming around him to the oversized projections in the background, where Timberlake appears as a statue, as a knight errant, as a great friend. The self-glorification was somewhat nuanced by a sympathetic speech. He saw familiar faces in the audience from previous concerts, he said: "We grew up together." After which he thanked them for the support.

Synchronous partying crowd

Eleven musicians stood in a row on stage, including four blaring brass instruments. There were dancers who also sang and it was nice that the musicians occasionally stepped down from their platforms to dance along. This created a synchronous partying crowd in the foreground. A surprising number of songs were played from the latest album Everything I Thought It Was (2024), on which Timberlake picked up the sharp funk and falsetto voice from his early days. The sultry ‘Drown’, with Timberlake ‘drowning’ on the background projections, was a highlight. The disco references of ‘My Favorite Drug’ and ‘F**kin’ Up the Disco’, including disco lights and disco dances, were also appealing. He saved the biggest hits for last, when songs like ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ and ‘Rock Your Body’ unleashed an exuberant cheerfulness.

One big street party

The atmosphere was part West Side Story, part Saturday Night Fever, and partly AI – due to the abundance of mindless bubble baths and explosions of colour on the enormous screens. There was sharp and smooth dancing, also by Timberlake, but the show relied a little too much on stage technology, the creative input was less surprising. Except for one fantastic find. That was when the entire troupe moved to a second stage at the back of the hall. They did not do this through a tunnel but via cordoned off paths right through the audience and in the meantime they played the song ‘Play’. They sang, danced, and played bass and trumpet, while walking. For a moment, Ziggo Dome turned into one big street party, a real ‘block party’.
