Justin Timberlake herrijst in Ziggo Dome na rampjaar x

Zanger en acteur Justin Timberlake zal 2024 niet onthouden als zijn topjaar. Zijn nieuwe album Everything I thought I was sloeg voor het eerst in zijn carrière nog geen deuk in een pakje boter en hij werd in juni gepakt met te veel alcohol op achter het stuur waardoor hij zijn rijbewijs kwijtraakte. In de Amsterdamse Ziggo Dome liet hij donderdagavond alle ellende echter even achter zich en steeg voor twee uurtjes boven zichzelf uit.

Voor we beginnen even een klacht. Hoe kan je als gemeente Amsterdam én de helft van de ring afsluiten én twee grote evenementen toestaan op één locatie. De heenweg zal door de deels afgesloten Amsterdamse ring voor velen niet zo’n feest geweest zijn. En waarschijnlijk was dit ook de reden dat sommige mensen eerder rennend de zaal verlieten. Dat Ajax simultaan thuis speelde in de tegenovergelegen Johan Cruijff-Arena zal ook een rol hebben gespeeld bij deze beslissing.

Aan Timberlake lag het zeker niet. Live optreden kan hij namelijk nog altijd als de beste. En de 43-jarige wereldster heeft met zes albums een nogal indrukwekkende collectie songs in zijn rugzak waar hij uit kan putten. Strak in het pak vuurde hij de ene na de andere hit af op zijn Nederlandse publiek, in wat de eerste avond in een serie van drie concerten in ons landje is op zijn wereldtour.

Goed dansfeest

Wie eerder bij één van zijn zeven wereldtours is geweest weet dat er altijd een goed dansfeest neer wordt gezet door de entertainer. Ook donderdagavond deed The forget tomorrow World tour z’n naam aan. Niet alleen voor Timberlake bestond er voor even geen morgen, ook de fans konden voor een paar uurtjes hun zorgen parkeren met de bijna twee uur durende supershow, waar zo’n 22 nummers de revue passeerden.

Ontspannen kletste de ster met zijn publiek, waarvan veel hem al volgen vanaf zijn *NSYNC tijd, waar hij als piepjong krullenbolletje meteen al vocaal opviel. Al bijna drie decennia is zijn publiek vertrouwd met hem, en in al die jaren leverde hij gestaag hits af. Zijn setlist is dan ook een reis door de tijd, die inmiddels meerdere generaties aanspreekt. In het publiek ontwaren we Chefaine (25) die met haar oma Johanna (71) is gekomen. Oma was eind vijftig toen ze fan werd en ze heeft haar kleindochter met het Timberlake-virus aangestoken. De twee zijn al eerder naar een concert van hem in Arnhem geweest. Chefaine: „Ik heb het met de paplepel ingegoten gekregen.”

Vader Martin en moeder Hilde zijn met hun kinderen Dies (12) en Biene (9) naar het concert gekomen uit Groningen. Ze slapen na het familie-uitje in een nabijgelegen hotel. Hilde: „We komen net uit het vliegtuig gerold. Niet zo handig gepland, we hebben nog een jetlag maar moesten dit zien.” Dies en Biene hopen vooral op Can’t stop the feeling en worden op hun wenken bediend.

Medley

Soms zijn songs opnieuw gearrangeerd in een soort medley stijl wat een verrassend effect geeft, zo gaat het nieuwe nummer Selfish over in What goes around comes around. Can’t stop the feeling wordt aangevuld met Good times van Chic. Het nummer Señorita wordt door hem op een keyboard gespeeld en soms pakt hij zijn gitaar erbij.

Halverwege het optreden loopt Timberlake door het publiek naar een kleiner podium achterin de zaal voor een akoestische set. De band The Tennesse kids blijft achter, maar de blazers en dansers gaan mee. Hij bedankt het publiek voor de jarenlange steun. Als zanger kleurde hij de jaren negentig voor veel mensen. Hij verkocht zo’n 54 miljoen albums en won tien Grammy’s. „Ik zie zoveel bekende gezichten. We zijn samen opgegroeid. Jullie hebben mijn droom mogelijk gemaakt.”

De absolute klapper van de avond is echter de uitsmijter Mirror, een nummer dat hij zingt vanaf een groot zwevend blok dat oprijst vanuit het podium met led lampjes. Liefst zeventig shows geeft hij in vijftig steden, misschien wordt het toch nog een topjaar.

Singer and actor Justin Timberlake will not remember 2024 as his peak year. His new album Everything I thought I was didn't make a dent in a pack of butter for the first time in his career and he was caught driving too much alcohol in June, causing him to lose his driver's license. In the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, however, he left all the misery behind him on Thursday evening and rose above himself for two hours.

Before we start, a quick complaint. How can you, as the municipality of Amsterdam, close half of the ring and allow two major events at one location? The outward journey will not have been much of a celebration for many due to the partially closed Amsterdam ring road. And this was probably also the reason that some people left the room running earlier. The fact that Ajax played simultaneously at home in the Johan Cruijff Arena opposite will also have played a role in this decision.

It certainly wasn't Timberlake's fault. He can still perform live as the best. And the 43-year-old world star has a rather impressive collection of songs in his backpack with six albums from which he can draw. Dressed in a smart suit, he fired one hit after another at his Dutch audience, in what is the first evening in a series of three concerts in our country on his world tour.

Good dance party 

Anyone who has been to one of his seven world tours knows that the entertainer always puts on a good dance party. The forgotten tomorrow World tour also lived up to its name on Thursday evening. Not only was there no tomorrow for Timberlake, fans were also able to put their worries aside for a few hours with the almost two-hour super show, where around 22 songs were performed.

The star chatted relaxedly with his audience, many of whom have been following him since his *NSYNC days, where he immediately stood out vocally as a very young curly haired boy. His audience has been familiar with him for almost three decades, and in all those years he has steadily delivered hits. His set list is a journey through time, which now appeals to several generations. In the audience we spot Chefaine (25) who came with her grandmother Johanna (71). Grandma was in her late fifties when she became a fan and infected her granddaughter with the Timberlake virus. The two have previously been to his concert in Arnhem. Chefaine: “I was spoon fed it.”

Father Martin and mother Hilde came to the concert from Groningen with their children Dies (12) and Biene (9). After the family outing, they sleep in a nearby hotel. Hilde: “We just rolled out of the plane. Not very well planned, we are still jet lagged but had to see this.” Dies and Biene mainly hope for Can't stop the feeling and are served at their beck and call.

Medley

Sometimes songs are rearranged in a kind of medley style, which gives a surprising effect, for example the new song Selfish turns into What goes around comes around. Can't stop the feeling is supplemented with Good times by Chic. He plays the song Señorita on a keyboard and sometimes he picks up his guitar.

Halfway through the performance, Timberlake walks through the audience to a smaller stage at the back of the room for an acoustic set. The band The Tennesse Kids stays behind, but the wind instruments and dancers come along. He thanks the public for their years of support. As a singer he colored the nineties for many people. He sold approximately 54 million albums and won ten Grammys. “I see so many familiar faces. We grew up together. You made my dream possible.”

The absolute hit of the evening, however, is the showpiece Mirror, a song he sings from a large floating block that rises from the stage with LED lights. He will give no fewer than seventy shows in fifty cities, and perhaps it will still be a great year.
